Better Battery Performance, Longer Life from New Lithium Ion Anode

"Development of a novel approach to producing hierarchical anode or cathode particles with controlled properties opens the door to many new directions for lithium-ion battery technology," said Gleb Yushin, an assistant professor in the School of Materials Science and Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Researchers at Georgia Institute of technology have devised a new "bottom-up" self-assembly technique to overcome technical difficulties that had rendered more efficient silicon-based anodes impractical. The current crop of batteries only feature anodes made from graphite.

But the new technique uses “nanotechnology to fine-tune its materials properties,” allowing silicon-based anodes to be more stable inside the battery, and thereby paving the way for “a ten-fold capacity improvement over graphite.” Not only will the new technique improve the storage capacity of Li-ion batteries manifold, but such batteries will also last much longer.

A hunt for lithium-ion batteries is likely to reveal quite a few of them inside a standard home, with a host of gadgets tapping into them these days. In fact, Li-ion batteries are gaining ground in other key industries, including hybrid automobiles and alternative energy. Now, a new breakthrough promises Li-ion batteries with vastly improved performance.

Sounds lovely, and like every other one of the ten million battery advancement anouncements, we'll be lucky to be able to access, let alone afford the technology within 20 freaking years. Samsung's NB30 Netbook is Available now, Samsung's NB30 Netbook review

As a refresher, Samsung's 10.1-inch NB30 is built around Intel's Pine Trail platform and sports a still-new Atom N450 processor clocked at 1.66GHz and Intel GMA3150 graphics. Other specs include 1GB of memory, a 160GB hard drive, 0.3MP webcam, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, 3 USB 2.0 ports, and 3-in-1 memory card reader.
Those of us in the States have been able to pick up Samsung's NB30 netbook for quite some time now, while our U.K. brethren have had to wait patiently. The wait is over, as Samsung's Pine Trail netbook has finally started shipping in the U.K.
Those who opt for Windows XP can pick up an NB30 netbook for £247.56 (about $383 USD) from MicroWarehouse.co.uk, or spend £296.95 (about $460 USD) and get Windows 7 Starter.
In addition to cruising along with Intel's Atom N450 processor, Toshiba says the mini NB305 comes with a full-size keyboard and full-size touchpad. The 10.1-inch netbook also features 1GB of DDR2-800 memory (upgradeable to 2GB), up to a 250GB HDD along with Toshiba's Hard Drive Impact Sensor technology, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, three USB ports (one of them Sleep-and-Charge capable), a memory card reader, webcam, a 6-cell battery, and Windows 7 Starter Edition.
Another day, another Atom N450-based netbook launch. This one comes courtesy of Toshiba, who on Monday announced its version of a next-gen netbook, the mini NB305. Asus Available with G73 Gaming Laptop

The G73 also boasts a 1920 x 1080 screen resolution, DVD burner, 4 USB ports, VGA and HDMI, an 8-in-1 card reader, 2.0MP, 8-cell battery, and Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Those looking for battery life first and performance second need not apply. But if you're into desktop replacements, the G73's spec sheet will certainly oblige.
Inside the 17.3-inch laptop sits an Intel Core i7 720QM quad-core processor, and that's just the beginning. You'll also find 8GB of DDR3 memory, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 graphics with a 1GB frame buffer, and a 500GB hard drive spinning at 7200RPM.
In the market for a gaming notebook? If so, Asus' G73 laptop might be the steal of the year, albeit it's still early. Nevertheless, we haven't been this stoked about an affordable gaming notebook since Gateway wowed us with its P7811-FX machine. On xotic pc you can get it with dual 500gb hard drives at 7200rpm with blu ray reader for 1,594$ or you can get it without blu ray for 1,500$ and both come with 2 year global warranty for free and also comes with a gaming mouse and a backpack for free.
No gaming laptop would be complete without discreet graphics, and the G73hj is no exception. This little beast will come with the Radeon HD 5870 for DX11 support. This marvelous video card will push the pixels around on a 17.3-inch LCD with a resolution of 1920x1080. Looking for other laptop accessories? Asus to produce volume notebooks

Asus had originally wanted to keep 70 percent of its notebook production with Pegatron Technology and outsource the remaining 30 percent to Foxconn. But in order to save costs, Asus decided to cut back orders with Pegatron to 50 percent and outsource the other 20 percent to a third player.
What's interesting is that Acer's market muscle might extend beyond Compal. Quanta Computer, Wistron, and Inventec are also weary about working with Asus, the sources added.
That's where Compal comes in. Asus had interest in letting Compal produce anywhere from 10-20 percent of those remaining orders in the second half of 2010, but Acer, speaking in private, managed to convince Compal to turn the orders down.
Acer may have taken a cue from Intel in terms of learning how to play hardball. We're not sure what exactly the OEM said to Compal Electronics, but whatever it was, it worked. Citing anonymous sources in the notebook industry, news and rumor site DigiTimes reports that Compal has suddenly turned orders from Asus to produce volume notebooks.
They are taking a calculated risk. Just like those tabloids that they put by the register that tell all kinds of ridiculous lies about celebrities. They make more money from the sales than the lawsuits cost them.
Or so says Acer's outspoken Chairman Wang Jeng-tang and President Gianfranco Lanci. In fact, it seems like everyone over at Acer likes to beat their chest, as evidenced by the company's founder earlier this week saying that US-brand PCs will be extinct in 20 years, "just like what happened to US television brands." What does Symbian Talks Netbooks and Tablets

Symbian, like any other OS, needs to evolve. That’s a tough thing if you’re proprietary. Very few companies have the savvy to keep proprietary products ‘fresh.’ Rather than buck the general trend, Symbian will tap into the creative resources of third-party developers, who will update and add functionality to the OS.
As for tablets and netbooks, Williams says: “It’s very likely that, in the next year or two, you would see such a product hit the marketplace. A lot of companies are experimenting with PDA-tablet-style form factors, also for stereo systems, and internet-connected devices running low power on primarily ARM architecture.”
What’s interesting in all this is direction of OS movement. While ‘bigger’ OSes are struggling to fit into the smaller hardware environments of the netbook, tablet PC, and smartphone worlds, the opposite seems less true. Smaller OSes, like Android, Symbian, or the iPhone, are scalable upward, making them credible challengers for this emerging marketplace.
And not just with smartphones in mind. Williams is looking to tablet PCs and netbooks as a logical extension of the Symbian OS. Which means it has to be hardware independent. Williams says there is a “Wild Ducks” project that makes Symbian hardware independent on smartphone platforms, and a port of Symbian to Intel’s Atom processor already exists. You can find more laptop accessories inforamtion on sunvalleyus, or you can just visit here: Dell XK850 AC Adapter(Output: 19.5V 3.34A Power: 65W )493092-002(Output: 19V 1.58A Power: 30W )Dell Inspiron 1525 AC Adapter(Input: AC100-240V (worldwide use) Output: DC19.5V 3.34A 65W Outlet: 3-prong)HP NC6220 ac adapter(Output: 18.5V 3.5A Power: 65W)EA1050A-120 LCD Adapter(Output: DC12V 5A Power: 60W Outlet: 2-prong)SA165A-1250V-3 LCD Adapter(Output: DC12V 5A Power: 60W Outlet: 2-prong)EA1050F-120 LCD Adapter(Output: DC12V 3.5A 42W Outlet: 2-prong)

Apple releases Mac OS X security update

As with most security releases, the latest Mac OS X update fixes issues within the core system and does not add new features to built-in applications or fix application bugs. Then you haven't been listening to the Maximum PC podcast. But Gordon's rant notwithstanding, Apple really is making a tablet (we think), and according to the Wall Street Journal, HarperCollins Publishers is currently hammering out a contract with Apple to provide electronic books for the upcoming tablet.
The Flash Player plug-in has been updated to version 10.0.42 fixing multiple vulnerabilities, including code execution on the user's computer. Adobe issued an update for this in early December, but Apple has included it with this release. Additional changes in other system level components like ImageIO, CUPS and OpenSSL provide further security for Mac OS X users.
Security Update 2010-001 fixes an issue in Mac OS X's CoreAudio where a maliciously crafted MP4 audio file could be used as a way to execute code or terminate an application on the user's computer. Image RAW's handling of DNG files has also been updated to avoid what Apple calls "arbitrary code execution."
In addition to updating Mac OS X, Apple also released an update for users of its Boot Camp software. According to notes provided with the update, Boot Camp 3.1 "adds support for Microsoft Windows 7 (Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate)." The update also fixes a couple of bugs with the trackpad, turns off the digital audio LED when not in use, and adds support for wireless keyboards and the Apple Magic Mouse. You can visit sunvalleyus for more laptop accessories information, or you can just visit here: Dell XK850 AC Adapter(Output: 19.5V 3.34A Power: 65W )493092-002(Output: 19V 1.58A Power: 30W )Dell Inspiron 1525 AC Adapter(Input: AC100-240V (worldwide use) Output: DC19.5V 3.34A 65W Outlet: 3-prong)HP NC6220 ac adapter(Output: 18.5V 3.5A Power: 65W)EA1050A-120 LCD Adapter(Output: DC12V 5A Power: 60W Outlet: 2-prong)SA165A-1250V-3 LCD Adapter(Output: DC12V 5A Power: 60W Outlet: 2-prong)EA1050F-120 LCD Adapter(Output: DC12V 3.5A 42W Outlet: 2-prong)

Pedro Matias Sets Text Messaging Record only Needs a QWERTY Keypad

Lest your sarcasm meter is busted, we don't really believe Matias belongs in the same echelon as some of the world's greatest athletes, but with nimble thumbs (and probably very little face-to-face interaction) Matias was able to hone his text messaging skills and shatter the previous record by 23 seconds.
"I did practice a lot and I always thought that this was my thing. For me, to have a record in the Guinness is a great thing," an elated Matias said after the event. As for the actual Cup Championship, the team from Korea won the $100,000 prize, while USA came in second and took home $20,000.
Wilt Chamberlain holds the record for most points scored in a professional basketball game, Tom Brady and Randy Moss set an NFL single-season record in 2007 for most touchdown passes between a passer and a receiver (23), Joe DiMaggios's 56-game hitting streak may never be broken, and 27-year-old Pedro Matias just set a Guinness new World Record for texting by typing a 264-character text in one-second shy of two minutes.
The feat came during the LG Mobile World Cup Championship (yup, such a thing exists) at Gotham Hall in New York City. And while we don't want to take anything away from Matias' accomplishment, it should be noted that he used a QWERTY phone. That'sprobably the same that was used to set the previous record, and while we could look it up, let's be honest, does anyone really care? We didn't think so.
